Alberto Fujimori: Former Peruvian President to Run for Office Again

Embattled former leader announces plans to run in 2026 election

Despite legal battles and corruption convictions, Fujimori remains a polarizing figure in Peruvian politics

Alberto Fujimori, the former president of Peru, has announced his intention to run for office again in the 2026 election. The announcement has sent shockwaves through the South American country, where Fujimori remains a polarizing figure.

Fujimori served as president from 1990 to 2000, during which time he implemented a number of controversial policies, including the forced sterilization of thousands of indigenous women. He was forced from office in 2000 amid corruption scandals and allegations of human rights abuses.

In 2009, Fujimori was convicted of corruption and sentenced to 25 years in prison. He was pardoned in December 2021 by then-President Pedro Castillo, who was later impeached and removed from office.

Fujimori's announcement has been met with mixed reactions. Some supporters believe that he is the best person to lead Peru out of its current economic crisis. Others are deeply concerned about his past human rights record and believe that he should not be allowed to hold office again.

It remains to be seen whether Fujimori will be able to overcome the legal challenges that stand in his way. If he is able to run and win, it would be a major upset in Peruvian politics.
