China Open Update: Alcaraz Wins First Title Since US Open 2022

Alcaraz Continues to Impress

World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz has started 2023 where he left off in 2022, winning the China Open on Sunday.

The 19-year-old Spaniard defeated America's Frances Tiafoe in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, to claim his second title of the year following his victory at the Argentina Open in February.

Alcaraz's Road to the Title

Alcaraz breezed through his opening two matches in Beijing, dispatching Alex de Minaur and Cameron Norrie in straight sets.

He faced a sterner test in the semifinals against Stefanos Tsitsipas but overcame the Greek in three sets, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.

In the final, Alcaraz was too strong for Tiafoe, breaking the American's serve three times and saving all four break points he faced.

Tiafoe Impresses in Defeat

Despite the loss, Tiafoe had a strong week in Beijing, reaching his second ATP final of the year.

The American defeated Casper Ruud and Andrey Rublev in straight sets in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively.

In the final, Tiafoe showed glimpses of his best tennis but was unable to match Alcaraz's consistency and power.

What's Next for Alcaraz and Tiafoe?

Alcaraz will now turn his attention to the ATP Finals in Turin, where he will be the top seed.

Tiafoe will also compete in Turin, where he will be looking to end the year on a high.
